RESUMEN

Real-time telemedicine detection can solve the problem of the shortage of public medical resources caused by the coming aging society. However, the development of such an integrated monitoring system is hampered by the need for high-performance sensors and the strict-requirement of long-distance signal transmission and reproduction. Here, a bionic crack-spring fiber sensor (CSFS) inspired by spider leg and cirrus whiskers for stretchable and weavable electronics is reported. Trans-scale conductive percolation networks of multilayer graphene around the surface of outer spring-like Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers and printing Ag enable a high sensitivity of 28475.6 and broad sensing range over 250%. The electromechanical changes in different stretching stages are simulated by Comsol to explain the response mechanism. The CSFS is incorporated into the fabric and realized the human-machine interactions (HMIs) for robot control. Furthermore, the 5G Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) system is developed for human healthcare data collection, transmission, and reproduction together with the integration of the CSFS, illustrating the huge potential of the approach in human-machine communication interfaces and intelligent telemedicine rehabilitation and diagnosis monitoring.

Flexible nanofiber membranes are compelling materials for the development of functional multi-mode sensors; however, their essential features such as high cross-sensitivity, reliable stability and signal discrimination capability have rarely been realized simultaneously in one sensor. Here, a novel multi-mode sensor with a nanofiber membrane structure based on multiple interpenetrating networks of bidisperse magnetic particles, sodium alginate (SA), chitosan (CHI) in conjunction with polyethylene oxide hydrogels was prepared in a controllable electrospinning technology. Specifically, the morphology distributions of nanofibers could be regulated by the crosslinking degree of the interpenetrating networks and the spinning process parameters. The incorporation of SA and CHI endowed the sensor with desirable flexibility, ideal biocompatibility and skin-friendly property. Besides, the assembled sensors not only displayed preferable magnetic sensitivity of 0.34 T-1 and reliable stability, but also exhibited favorable cross-sensitivity, quick response time, and long-term durability for over 5000 cycles under various mechanical stimuli. Importantly, the multi-mode stimuli could be discriminated via producing opposite electrical signals. Furthermore, based on the signal distinguishability of the sensor, a wearable Morse code translation system assisted by the machine learning algorithm was demonstrated, enabling a high recognizing accuracy (>99.1 %) for input letters and numbers information. Due to the excellent multifunctional sensing characteristics, we believe that the sensor will have a high potential in wearable soft electronics and human-machine interactions.

RESUMEN

A wearable Braille-to-speech translation system is of great importance for providing auditory feedback in assisting blind people and people with speech impairment. However, previous reported Braille-to-speech translation systems still need to be improved in terms of comfortability or integration. Here, a Braille-to-speech translation system that uses dual-functional electrostatic transducers which are made of fabric-based materials and can be integrated into textiles is reported. Based on electrostatic induction, the electrostatic transducer can either serve as a tactile sensor or a loudspeaker with the same design. The proposed electrostatic transducers have excellent output performances, mechanical robustness, and working stability. By combining the devices with machine learning algorithms, it is possible to translate the Braille alphabet and 40 commonly used words (extensible) into speech with an accuracy of 99.09% and 97.08%, respectively. This work demonstrates a new approach for further developments of advanced assistive technology toward improving the lives of disabled people.

These datasets contain measures from multi-modal data sources. They include objective and subjective measures commonly used to determine cognitive states of workload, situational awareness, stress, and fatigue using data collection tools such as NASA-TLX, SART, eye tracking, EEG, Health Monitoring Watch, a survey to assess training, and a think-aloud situational awareness assessment following the SPAM methodology. Also, data from a simulation formaldehyde production plant based on the interaction of the participants in a controlled control room experimental setting is included. The interaction with the plant is based on a human-in-the-loop alarm handling and process control task flow, which includes Monitoring, Alarm Handling, Recovery planning, and intervention (Troubleshooting, Control and Evaluation). Data was collected from 92 participants, split into four groups while they underwent the described task flow. Each participant tested three scenarios lasting 15-18 min with a -10-min survey completion and break period in between using different combinations of decision support tools. The decision support tools tested and varied for each group include alarm prioritisation vs. none, paper-based vs. Digitised screen-based procedures, and an AI recommendation system. This is relevant to compare current practices in the industry and the impact on operators' performance and safety. It is also applicable to validate proposed solutions for the industry. A statistical analysis was performed on the dataset to compare the outcomes of the different groups. Decision-makers can use these datasets for control room design and optimisation, process safety engineers, system engineers, human factors engineers, all in process industries, and researchers in similar or close domains.

This theoretical article examines the concept of social support in the context of human-automation interaction, outlining several critical issues. We identified several factors that we expect to influence the consequences of social support and to what extent it is perceived as appropriate (e.g. provider possibilities, recipient expectations), notably regarding potential threats to self-esteem. We emphasise the importance of performance (including extra-role performance) as a potential outcome, whereas previous research has primarily concentrated on health and well-being. We discuss to what extent automation may provide different types of social support (e.g. emotional, instrumental), and how it differs from human support. Finally, we propose a taxonomy of automated support, arguing that source of support is not a binary concept. We conclude that more empirical work is needed to examine the multiple effects of social support for core performance indicators and extra-role performance and emphasise that there are ethical questions involved.


This theoretical article examines the role of automated social support given the increasing ability of automated systems. It concludes that it seems likely that automated systems may be perceived as supportive if they conform to pertinent criteria for design. However, empirical studies are needed to assess the impact of the complex interplay of humans and automation being involved together in the design and provision of social support.

The emergence of the Metaverse is raising important questions in the field of human-machine interaction that must be addressed for a successful implementation of the new paradigm. Therefore, the exploration and integration of both technology and human interaction within this new framework are needed. This paper describes an innovative and technically viable proposal for virtual shopping in the fashion field. Virtual hands directly scanned from the real world have been integrated, after a retopology process, in a virtual environment created for the Metaverse, and have been integrated with digital nails. Human interaction with the Metaverse has been carried out through the acquisition of the real posture of the user's hands using an infrared-based sensor and mapping it in its virtualized version, achieving natural identification. The technique has been successfully tested in an immersive shopping experience with the Meta Quest 2 headset as a pilot project, where a transactions mechanism based on the blockchain technology (non-fungible tokens, NFTs) has allowed for the development of a feasible solution for massive audiences. The consumers' reactions were extremely positive, with a total of 250 in-person participants and 120 remote accesses to the Metaverse. Very interesting technical guidelines are raised in this project, the resolution of which may be useful for future implementations.

Motion recognition (MR)-based somatosensory interaction technology, which interprets user movements as input instructions, presents a natural approach for promoting human-computer interaction, a critical element for advancing metaverse applications. Herein, this work introduces a non-intrusive muscle-sensing wearable device, that in conjunction with machine learning, enables motion-control-based somatosensory interaction with metaverse avatars. To facilitate MR, the proposed device simultaneously detects muscle mechanical activities, including dynamic muscle shape changes and vibrational mechanomyogram signals, utilizing a flexible 16-channel pressure sensor array (weighing ≈0.38 g). Leveraging the rich information from multiple channels, a recognition accuracy of ≈96.06% is achieved by classifying ten lower-limb motions executed by ten human subjects. In addition, this work demonstrates the practical application of muscle-sensing-based somatosensory interaction, using the proposed wearable device, for enabling the real-time control of avatars in a virtual space. This study provides an alternative approach to traditional rigid inertial measurement units and electromyography-based methods for achieving accurate human motion capture, which can further broaden the applications of motion-interactive wearable devices for the coming metaverse age.

BACKGROUND: There is a significant need to monitor human cognitive performance in complex environments, with one example being pilot performance. However, existing assessments largely focus on subjective experiences (e.g., questionnaires) and the evaluation of behavior (e.g., aircraft handling) as surrogates for cognition or utilize brainwave measures which require artificial setups (e.g., simultaneous auditory stimuli) that intrude on the primary tasks. Blink-related oscillations (BROs) are a recently discovered neural phenomenon associated with spontaneous blinking that can be captured without artificial setups and are also modulated by cognitive loading and the external sensory environment-making them ideal for brain function assessment within complex operational settings. METHODS: Electroencephalography (EEG) data were recorded from eight adult participants (five F, M = 21.1 years) while they completed the Multi-Attribute Task Battery under three different cognitive loading conditions. BRO responses in time and frequency domains were derived from the EEG data, and comparisons of BRO responses across cognitive loading conditions were undertaken. Simultaneously, assessments of blink behavior were also undertaken. RESULTS: Blink behavior assessments revealed decreasing blink rate with increasing cognitive load (p < 0.001). Prototypical BRO responses were successfully captured in all participants (p < 0.001). BRO responses reflected differences in task-induced cognitive loading in both time and frequency domains (p < 0.05). Additionally, reduced pre-blink theta band desynchronization with increasing cognitive load was also observed (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study confirms the ability of BRO responses to capture cognitive loading effects as well as preparatory pre-blink cognitive processes in anticipation of the upcoming blink during a complex multitasking situation. These successful results suggest that blink-related neural processing could be a potential avenue for cognitive state evaluation in operational settings-both specialized environments such as cockpits, space exploration, military units, etc. and everyday situations such as driving, athletics, human-machine interactions, etc.-where human cognition needs to be seamlessly monitored and optimized.

RESUMEN

The sense of agency refers to the experience of control over voluntary actions and their effects. There is growing interest in the notion of we-agency, whereby individual sense of agency is supplanted by a collective agentic experience. The existence of this unique agentic state would have profound implications for human responsibility, and, as such, warrants further scrutiny. In this paper, we review the concept of we-agency and examine whether evidence supports it. We argue that this concept entails multiplying hypothetical agentic states associated with joint action, thus ending up with an entangled phenomenology that appears somewhat speculative when weighted against the available evidence. In light of this, we suggest that the concept of we-agency should be abandoned in favor of a more parsimonious framework for the sense of agency in joint action.

Human-machine interaction (HMI) technology has undergone significant advancements in recent years, enabling seamless communication between humans and machines. Its expansion has extended into various emerging domains, including human healthcare, machine perception, and biointerfaces, thereby magnifying the demand for advanced intelligent technologies. Neuromorphic computing, a paradigm rooted in nanoionic devices that emulate the operations and architecture of the human brain, has emerged as a powerful tool for highly efficient information processing. This paper delivers a comprehensive review of recent developments in nanoionic device-based neuromorphic computing technologies and their pivotal role in shaping the next-generation of HMI. Through a detailed examination of fundamental mechanisms and behaviors, the paper explores the ability of nanoionic memristors and ion-gated transistors to emulate the intricate functions of neurons and synapses. Crucial performance metrics, such as reliability, energy efficiency, flexibility, and biocompatibility, are rigorously evaluated. Potential applications, challenges, and opportunities of using the neuromorphic computing technologies in emerging HMI technologies, are discussed and outlooked, shedding light on the fusion of humans with machines.

Flexible tactile sensors play an important role in the development of wearable electronics and human-machine interaction (HMI) systems. However, poor sensing abilities, an indispensable external energy supply, and limited material selection have significantly constrained their advancement. Herein, a self-powered flexible triboelectric sensor (TES) is proposed by integrating lotus-root-derived porous carbon (PC) into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Owing to the superior charge capturing capability of PC, the PDMS/PC (PPC)-based TES exhibits an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 22.8 V when it is periodically patted by skin at the pressure of 2 N and the frequency of 1 Hz, which is 5 times higher than that of a pristine PDMS-based TES. Furthermore, the as-prepared self-powered TES exhibits a high sensitivity of 3.24 V kPa-1 below 15 kPa for detecting human motion signals, such as finger clicks, joint bends, etc. Last but not the least, after the assembly of a PPC-based TES array and construction of an HMI system, the robotic snake can be controlled remotely by recognizing finger touching signals. This work shows broad potential applications for the self-powered TES in the fields of intelligent robotics, flexible electronics, disaster relief, and intelligence spying.

The recent development of wearable devices is revolutionizing the way of human-machine interaction (HMI). Nowadays, an interactive interface that carries more embedded information is desired to fulfill the increasing demand in era of Internet of Things. However, present approach normally relies on sensor arrays for memory expansion, which inevitably brings the concern of wiring complexity, signal differentiation, power consumption, and miniaturization. Herein, a one-channel based self-powered HMI interface, which uses the eigenfrequency of magnetized micropillar (MMP) as identification mechanism, is reported. When manually vibrated, the inherent recovery of the MMP causes a damped oscillation that generates current signals because of Faraday's Law of induction. The time-to-frequency conversion explores the MMP-related eigenfrequency, which provides a specific solution to allocate diverse commands in an interference-free behavior even with one electric channel. A cylindrical cantilever model is built to regulate the MMP eigenfrequencies via precisely designing the dimensional parameters and material properties. It is shown that using one device and two electrodes, high-capacity HMI interface can be realized when the magnetic micropillars (MMPs) with different eigenfrequencies have been integrated. This study provides the reference value to design the future HMI system especially for situations that require a more intuitive and intelligent communication experience with high-memory demand.

Piezoionic materials play a pivotal role in energy-harvesting ionotronics. However, a persistent challenge lies in balancing the structural requirements for voltage generation, current conduction, and mechanical adaptability. The conventional approach of employing crystalline heterostructures for stress concentration and localized charge separation, while effective for voltage generation, often compromises the stretchability and long-range charge transport found in homogeneous quasisolid states. Herein, phase and interface engineering strategy is introduced to address this dilemma and a piezoionic elastomer is presented that seamlessly integrates ionic liquids and ionic plastic crystals, forming a finely tuned microphase-separated structure with an intermediate phase. This approach promotes charge separation via stress concentration among hard phases while leveraging the high ionic charge mobility in soft and intermediate phases. Impressively, the elastomer achieves an extraordinary piezoionic coefficient of about 6.0 mV kPa-1 , a more than threefold improvement over current hydrogels and ionogels. The resulting power density of 1.3 µW cm-3 sets a new benchmark, exceeding that of state-of-the-art piezoionic gels. Notably, this elastomer combines outstanding stretchability, remarkable toughness, and rapid self-healing capability, underscoring its potential for real-world applications. This work may represent a stride toward mechanically robust energy harvesting systems and provide insights into ionotronic systems for human-machine interaction.

Big data and cloud computing are propelling research in human-computer interface within academia. However, the potential of wearable human-machine interaction (HMI) devices utilizing multiperformance ionic hydrogels remains largely unexplored. Here, we present a motion recognition-based HMI system that enhances movement training. We engineered dual-network PAM/CMC/TA (PCT) hydrogels by reinforcing polyacrylamide (PAM) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) polymers with tannic acid (TA). These hydrogels possess exceptional transparency, adhesion, and remodelling features. By combining an elastic PAM backbone with tunable amounts of CMC and TA, the PCT hydrogels achieve optimal electromechanical performance. As strain sensors, they demonstrate higher sensitivity (GF = 4.03), low detection limit (0.5 %), and good linearity (0.997). Furthermore, we developed a highly accurate (97.85 %) motion recognition system using machine learning and hydrogel-based wearable sensors. This system enables contactless real-time training monitoring and wireless control of trolley operations. Our research underscores the effectiveness of PCT hydrogels for real-time HMI, thus advancing next-generation HMI systems.

Conductive hydrogels have received increasing attention in the field of wearable electronics, but they also face many challenges such as temperature tolerance, biocompatibility, and stability of mechanical properties. In this paper, a double network hydrogel of MXene/TEMPO bacterial cellulose (TOBC) system is proposed. Through solvent replacement, the hydrogel exhibits wide temperature tolerance (-20-60 °C) and stable mechanical properties. A large number of hydrogen bonds, MXene/TOBC dynamic three-dimensional network system, and micellar interactions endow the hydrogel with excellent mechanical properties (elongation at break ~2800 %, strength at break ~420 kPa) and self-healing ability. The introduction of tannic acid prevents the oxidation of MXene and the loss of electrical properties of the hydrogel. In addition, the sensor can also quickly (74 ms) and sensitive (gauge factor = 15.65) wirelessly monitor human motion, and the biocompatibility can well avoid the stimulation when it comes into contact with the human body. This series of research work reveals the fabrication of MXene-like flexible wearable electronic devices based on self-healing, good cell compatibility, high sensitivity, wide temperature tolerance and durability, which can be used in smart wearable, wireless monitoring, human-machine Interaction and other aspects show great application potential.

Tactile sensors play an important role in human-machine interaction (HMI). Compared to contact tactile sensing, which leaves physical hardware vulnerable to wear and tear, proximity sensing is better at reacting to remote events before physical contact. The apteronotus albifrons possess ion channel receptors for remote surroundings perception. Inspired by the relevant ion channel structure and self-powered operation mode, we designed a new proximity sensor with ion rectification characteristics and self-powered capability. This bio-inspired ion channel receptor exploits the hygroelectric effect to convert the humidity information into a series of current signals when the living organism approaches, and it is insensitive to non-aquatic non-organisms. The sensor offers high sensitivity (2.3 mm-1), a suitable range (0-10 mm) for close object detection, fast response (0.3 s), and fast recovery (2.5 s). The unique combination of bio-sensitivity, non-contact detection characteristics, and humidity-based power generation capabilities enriches the functionality of future HMI electronics. As a proof of concept, the sensor has been successfully applied in different scenarios such as human health management, early warning systems, non-contact switches to prevent virus transmission, object recognition, and finger trajectory detection.

Human-machine interaction (HMI) technology shows an important application prospect in rehabilitation medicine, but it is greatly limited by the unsatisfactory recognition accuracy and wearing comfort. Here, this work develops a fully flexible, conformable, and functionalized multimodal HMI interface consisting of hydrogel-based sensors and a self-designed flexible printed circuit board. Thanks to the component regulation and structural design of the hydrogel, both electromyogram (EMG) and forcemyography (FMG) signals can be collected accurately and stably, so that they are later decoded with the assistance of artificial intelligence (AI). Compared with traditional multichannel EMG signals, the multimodal human-machine interaction method based on the combination of EMG and FMG signals significantly improves the efficiency of human-machine interaction by increasing the information entropy of the interaction signals. The decoding accuracy of the interaction signals from only two channels for different gestures reaches 91.28%. The resulting AI-powered active rehabilitation system can control a pneumatic robotic glove to assist stroke patients in completing movements according to the recognized human motion intention. Moreover, this HMI interface is further generalized and applied to other remote sensing platforms, such as manipulators, intelligent cars, and drones, paving the way for the design of future intelligent robot systems.

Conversational Agents (CAs) are characterized by their roles within a narrative and the communication style they adopt during conversations. Within computer games, users' evaluation of the narrative is influenced by their estimation of CAs' intelligence and believability. However, the impact of CAs' roles and communication styles on users' experience remains unclear. This research investigates such influence of CAs' roles and communication styles through a crime-solving textual game. Four different CAs were developed and each of them was assigned to a role of either witness or suspect and to a communication style than can be either aggressive or cooperative. Communication styles were simulated through a Wizard of Oz method. Users' task was to interact, through real-time written exchanges, with the four CAs and then to identify the culprit, assess the certainty of their judgments, and rank the CAs based on their conversational preferences. In addition, users' experience was evaluated using perceptual measures (perceived intelligence and believability scales) and behavioral measures (including analysis of users' input length, input delay, and conversation length). The results revealed that users' evaluation of CAs' intelligence and believability was primarily influenced by CAs' roles. On the other hand, users' conversational behaviors were mainly influenced by CAs' communication styles. CAs' communication styles also significantly determined users' choice of the culprit and conversational preferences.

Electronic skin has shown great application potential in many fields such as healthcare monitoring and human-machine interaction due to their excellent sensing performance, mechanical properties and biocompatibility. This paper starts from the materials selection and structures design of electronic skin, and summarizes their different applications in the field of healthcare equipment, especially current development status of wearable sensors with different functions, as well as the application of electronic skin in virtual reality. The challenges of electronic skin in the field of wearable devices and healthcare, as well as our corresponding strategies, are discussed to provide a reference for further advancing the research of electronic skin.
